Dana Bowden
A photographer who spent two decades chasing the truth of a subject, and who now builds motorcycles for people whose reasons are larger than themselves.
Dana built a national reputation behind a camera. Editorial work, portraiture, landscape, the kind of assignments that get handed to the person who will not come back with the obvious frame. He was known for a habit that made him expensive and made him worth it: he would not leave until the picture was actually there.
That meant driving eleven hours to be somewhere at four in the morning for twenty minutes of light. It meant sitting in a tin shed on a cold coast for four days until a man who did not want his photograph taken forgot the camera was in the room. It meant burning an entire commission budget on a helicopter because the road version of the shot was a lie about the scale of the place.
The turn
The motorcycles started as a private thing. A neglected airhead, a winter, a garage. What Dana found in the teardown was the same discipline he had spent twenty years practising, only slower and with consequences you could hold. A photograph is a decision made in a fraction of a second. A motorcycle is ten thousand decisions made over a year, and every single one of them is still there when you are finished.
Riders started asking. Then they started paying. Then they started waiting. BoMoto exists because the waiting list got long enough that it had to become a real workshop with a real partner behind it.
What he is looking for in a client
Dana turns down more commissions than he accepts, and it is almost never about the money. He builds for people who are riding toward something. The surgeon who rides before rounds because it is the only hour that belongs to him. The widower riding his wife's route. The man who put three kids through school and is finally allowed to want one thing.
Purpose is the specification that matters most. Everything else on the build sheet is downstream of it.
The eye came first. The wrench came second.
Twenty years of looking hard at things is not a charming biographical detail. It is the reason the proportions on these motorcycles are right.
Anyone can build a motorcycle. Very few people can decide what it should be.Dana Bowden

BoMoto is a partnership between Dana Bowden as operating partner and Kauk Holdings LLC as silent partner. Kauk Holdings provides the capital structure, the acquisition budget that lets us buy the right donor rather than the available one, and the patience that a twelve month build actually requires.
It is a deliberately quiet arrangement. One person builds the motorcycles. The business exists so that person never has to compromise a build for cash flow.
